What Is Conformal Radiation Therapy?
With conformal radiation therapy, we send radiation beams that match the exact shape of a tumor. With past techniques, radiation beams only matched the height and width of a tumor.
We send these beams to the exact tumor location, minimizing harmful effects on surrounding healthy tissue. This technique allows us to send higher doses of radiation to the tumor.
When Is 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy Used?
Depending on the size and shape of a tumor and your individual needs, your provider may use conformal radiation therapy when other options are limited. For example, we may use 3D conformal radiation therapy when we can’t use intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
We often use 3D conformal radiation therapy in emergencies because the set-up time for treatment is shorter than other types of radiation therapy. Often, 3D conformal radiation therapy is a quicker treatment.
What to Expect with 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy
We often combine 3D conformal radiation therapy with image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). With IGRT, you receive an imaging scan that provides a detailed image of the tumor. This scan allows your radiation oncologist (cancer specialist) to see the tumor clearly and plan radiation precisely.
Your team uses this image to adjust radiation doses each day. A specialized computer program helps us map out exactly where to send radiation beams.
On the day of treatment, you lie on a special robotic couch called a HexaPOD™. This couch helps us position you for treatment. The 3D radiation machine rotates around your body to precisely deliver radiation.
With 3D conformal radiation therapy, you have multiple treatment sessions over several weeks. Your exact treatment schedule depends on factors such as tumor type, location, and size.
