The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a comprehensive, individually focused program providing psychiatric treatment and services that support positive behavioral changes through interactive and interpersonal exploration and development.
- IOP is an intensive group therapy program that spans four to six weeks, for nine to 12 hours per week.
- IOP is for those 18 years or older who have a primary psychiatric diagnosis of a mood or anxiety disorder.
- IOP is ideal for people recently discharged from inpatient programs or, in some cases, as an alternative to inpatient treatment.
Our commitment to each patient is to ensure they have the appropriate tools necessary to successfully complete the program and understand skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle within the community after completion of the program.
Day to Day
A multidisciplinary team will design an individual treatment plan for each person. Each day, patients participate in group activities with one of our well-trained clinicians. In addition, they have opportunities to meet individually with a clinician throughout the program, and to meet with a nurse practitioner for any medication management needs.
IOP provides a unique opportunity for patients to improve social support, self-esteem, and have a greater overall life satisfaction. Group sessions will help participants
- Reduce fears, anxieties, and depression
- Manage anger, guilt, and shame
- Develop healthy coping skills to manage symptoms
- Curb destructive impulses and behaviors
- Express thoughts and feelings
- Practice interpersonal effectiveness and communication skills
- Build structure into their days
- Process trauma with peers
- Manage medications through individual psychiatry sessions
Targeted Therapies
“After the Call” First Responders Mental Health Services
After the Call is an intensive outpatient program specializing in first responder behavioral health. Designed for first responders to stay in their community and begin developing insight into the stressors in their lives, After the Call helps first responders manage their anxieties, cope with daily stressors, and process them in a supportive environment. This is an intensive group therapy program that meets nine to 12 hours per week for approximately four to six weeks.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy offers a structured approach to treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
A therapist trained in EMDR therapy will guide their patient through bilateral stimulation, which activates the whole brain, by having them look side to side, tap on alternate shoulders, or listen to beeps in alternating ears. Bilateral stimulation makes it easier for the brain to reprocess memories, reducing someone’s emotional response to a traumatic event.
Please note that the current pathway to EMDR therapy for a patient is through IOP
Additional Resources
In addition to the group therapy sessions, individual and family counseling with a licensed clinical therapist (psychiatrist, therapist, or nurse practitioner) is also available to After the Call patients. During the course of treatment, every patient will be assessed by a psychiatrist with medication management as appropriate.
Most insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid offer coverage for this service.
Graduation From the Program
Upon graduation, patients complete a Rock Ceremony that honors their journey, provides a visual reminder of their new coping skills, and supports the accomplishments achieved within the time frame of the program. Many patients who complete the program go from feeling broken, defeated, and hopeless to being full of optimism, attaining strength and determination. We are cheering everyone on.
