What is the Functional Capacity Evaluation? 

The Functional Capacity Evaluation identifies a patient’s physical capabilities and tolerances. The evaluation will influence the direction of a patient’s care and determine when it is appropriate for them to return to work. 

Returning to Work 

There are two different approaches to the Functional Capability Evaluation. 

• Any Occupation: A generic format to determine your physical capabilities and limitations unrelated to any specific job. 
• Own Occupation: Testing to determine your physical capabilities and limitation based on the requirements of your job. 

What to Expect with Functional Capacity Evaluation 

Your Functional Capacity Evaluation will consist of several tests to determine your physical capability. Some tests include 

• Cardiovascular/ Aerobic Capacity Assessment: You will be asked questions to determine your cardiovascular health history and then perform a walking treadmill test. 
• Dynamic Lifting/ Material Handing Assessment: You will be asked to lift boxes with varying weights from different positions such as floor to waist, waist to shoulder, and above head. 
• Positional Tolerance Testing: You will be tested to see how you handle static postures such as standing and sitting as well as dynamic movements such as reaching and twisting.
