What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema causes swelling due to a blockage in the lymphatic system that results in a build-up of fluid in the body’s tissue.
It can develop after cancer treatment or hereditary conditions.
What Is Lymphedema Therapy?
Lymphedema therapy aims to decrease swelling as much as possible through different methods. Another goal of therapy is to educate patients on how to manage symptoms independently.
What to Expect with Lymphedema Therapy
After evaluation, your individual treatment plan may include
- Compression: Your therapist will determine the best compression garments for you.
- Exercise: Moving the body reduces the build-up of excess fluid in the body.
- Manual techniques: Your therapist will show you how to reduce swelling by manually draining the lymphatic system.
