What is Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?
Blood flood restriction (BFR) therapy uses pressurized cuffs to restrict venous blood return, or blood flow into the heart from the body, during exercise. BFR therapy increases metabolic byproducts, such as lactate, which results in less muscle damage and greater muscle strength while training at a lower intensity.
Why Might I Need Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?
You may benefit from BFR therapy if you
- Are in physical therapy
- Are an athlete
- Have joint pain or weak muscles
What to Expect with Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?
During a typical session of BFR therapy, you will wear pressurized cuffs on either your upper arms or upper thighs depending on what muscle group you are targeting.
You will perform each exercise with a lower load and higher repetitions. For example, you may perform one movement 30 times with a 30-second rest, then 15 times with a 30-second rest, and then 15 more times.
