What Is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy, performed in pools or other bodies of water, is an alternative therapeutic option that provides gentle resistance to muscles while reducing stress on joints.
Why Might I Need Aquatic Therapy?
You may benefit from aquatic therapy if you have weight-bearing limits after surgery or have difficulty standing for long periods of time. You may also benefit from aquatic therapy if you have:
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
What to Expect with Aquatic Therapy
After an evaluation, your individualized treatment plan may include
- Standing/walking exercises: In neck-deep water, your therapist will assist you with walking across the pool and/or performing leg/arm movements. Ankle weights may be used for resistance or spinal decompression.
- Deep water exercises: Deep water exercises are used for aerobic conditioning, building balance and core strength, and decompression.
- Floating exercises: Manual therapy techniques are performed while floating with support from a headrest and other buoyancy devices.
