Four Kettering Health medical centers earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“As a system, we place a great emphasis on providing safe, compassionate, and innovative care,” said Jen Shull, system chief nursing officer and head of quality and safety. “Our care teams are made up of dedicated clinicians and support teams who are devoted to seeing to the safety of each patient, every day. We are so grateful for them and for this recognition that affirms their hard work.”
Focus on safety
Leaders across Kettering Health are advancing initiatives to strengthen the system’s culture of safety at every level of care. System-wide 30-minute meetings are held at regular intervals for intentional discussions about patient safety, including focusing on policies and protocols about a specific topic. Every day, leaders and their teams at each medical center review any safety concerns or issues to address them in a timely manner. Providers, nurses and care team members can also receive recognition for promoting awareness, education and care relating to the best outcomes for sepsis patients.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
