Cancer Care

When patients receive an abnormal result from a scan, lab test, or physical exam, the time between that discovery and a clear diagnosis can be filled with uncertainty and fear.
Kettering Health is working to change that experience through its Cancer Diagnostic Clinic, a program designed to provide rapid evaluation, clarity, and a direct path forward.
“This clinic is designed for patients who don’t yet have a cancer diagnosis but have findings that require further evaluation,” said Tricia Tobe, executive director of Kettering Health Oncology Services. “Patients seen here have not been diagnosed with cancer. They are referred by another provider or self-referral due to concerning results from a physical exam, imaging or radiology studies, or laboratory testing. During their evaluation with our team, some patients may ultimately receive a cancer diagnosis.”
A guided process
The clinic’s structured approach ensures that patients are not left navigating the healthcare system alone. Instead, they are guided through a coordinated process that prioritizes speed and precision.
“When that happens, they are already connected with the oncology team at Kettering Health and are fast-tracked to an oncologist,” Tobe explained. “Connecting the right patient to the right provider at the right time. We aim to shorten the time between identifying a concerning finding and receiving clear answers through a faster, more streamlined process.”
Serving the community
The clinic began as a part-time service in September 2025 and expanded to full-time operations in January 2026. Its creation was driven by a need to better serve the community by diagnosing and treating cancer earlier for better outcomes.
Linda Vaders, APRN-CNP, who works closely with patients in the clinic, explains, “Patients should come to us if they have a lump, abnormal lab results, or concerning imaging findings. We order any necessary labs, imaging, or referrals. If questions arise during the review, I consult with an oncologist and then discuss the results with the patient. If cancer is diagnosed, the patient is referred to the oncology team for further care.”
Improving access
One of the clinic’s most impactful features is its speed. Patients are typically seen within 72 hours, allowing the diagnostic process to begin almost immediately. “It is valuable to be seen by a provider within 72 hours to address the anxiety of not knowing,” Vaders added. “By the end of the visit they have direction and a plan.”
While similar diagnostic models exist in other parts of the country, they remain relatively uncommon. By introducing this approach, Kettering Health is improving access, reducing delays, and enhancing the overall patient experience.
“Ultimately, the Cancer Diagnostic Clinic fills a critical gap, turning a period of uncertainty into a streamlined, supportive process focused on answers, efficiency, and peace of mind,” said Tobe.
