What is a Mastectomy?
A mastectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove breast tissue, most often as part of breast cancer treatment. The goal is to remove cancer while protecting as much strength and function as possible. In many cases, the chest muscles are left intact, which helps maintain upper body movement and supports future reconstruction if desired.
There are different types of mastectomy, and your care team will guide you in choosing the option that best fits your diagnosis and personal goals. Options may include:
- Simple (total) mastectomy: Removes the entire breast, including the nipple and surrounding tissue
- Modified radical mastectomy: Removes the breast along with some nearby lymph nodes to check for cancer spread
Surgery usually requires a short hospital stay. Afterward, you may have temporary drains to prevent fluid buildup and will receive instructions for caring for the surgical area.
Recovery focuses on healing and gradually regaining movement. Most patients are encouraged to begin gentle arm exercises to reduce stiffness and improve mobility. Pain and swelling are common at first but improve over time.
Depending on your results, additional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy may be recommended.
Conditions a Mastectomy Treats
Mastectomy is used to treat breast cancer and, in some cases, to reduce the risk of developing it in people at high risk.
Breast cancer may develop when abnormal cells grow in breast tissue. While symptoms vary, some people notice:
- A lump in the breast or underarm
- Changes in breast shape or size
- Skin dimpling or irritation
- Nipple changes or discharge
Risk factors for breast cancer can include:
- Family history or genetic mutations (such as BRCA genes)
- Aging
- Hormonal influences
- Lifestyle factors like obesity or alcohol use
Your provider will consider all of these factors when recommending treatment.
