What is Histotripsy?
Histotripsy is a noninvasive procedure that utilizes high-energy ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors directly. Unlike surgery or radiation, Histotripsy liquefies the tumor without injuring nearby important structures.
With the absence of incisions, patients typically experience quicker recovery and minimal side effects.
What Does Histotripsy Treat?
Histotripsy is a treatment used for select liver tumors. Your care team will decide whether this procedure is appropriate based on factors such as:
- Tumor size
- Tumor location
- Overall liver health
- Your overall health and medical history
Who is a Good Candidate for Histotripsy?
Histotripsy is an option for people who:
- Have smaller liver tumors
- May not be good candidates for surgery
- Need a noninvasive treatment option
- Have tumors located near major blood vessels or bile ducts
Your healthcare provider will review your imaging, medical history, and treatment goals to determine if Histotripsy is right for you.
What to Expect
Before the procedure, your medical history and imaging will be evaluated by your care team. Because the liver moves with breathing, patients are put under general anesthesia to help ensure accurate treatment.
To identify the treatment area and create a detailed plan, ultrasound imaging creates parameters around the liver, which typically takes about 10 minutes. The Histotripsy system then delivers focused ultrasound waves directly to the tumor.
After Treatment
Once the procedure is complete, your care team will monitor you as you recover from general anesthesia. Many patients return home the same day, while some may stay overnight for further monitoring.
Most see minimal side effects, with some patients experiencing temporary skin irritation around the treated area, which can be remedied with ointment.
Your physician will schedule a follow-up CT scan or MRI to review the treatment outcome. You will then be monitored every three to six weeks to ensure recovery.
