Kettering Health’s second Invena™ Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) machine, which detects cancer in dense breast tissue, will be added at Kettering Health Miamisburg in June 2023.
Dense breast tissue and cancer both show up white on traditional mammograms. The machine uses sound waves to detect cancer in dense tissue that would otherwise go unnoticed. About 40% of women have dense breast tissue and require additional screening.
“The need is there and now women will have faster access to this important screening tool,” Sally Grady, Kettering Health Breast Centers director, says.
The system’s first ABUS machine is located at Soin Medical Center. Grady approximates that 15 ABUS screenings a day are performed there. This is the first ABUS machine in Montgomery County.
“[The machine] will allow us to serve women in a more efficient manner,” Grady says.
