What is Traveler’s Diarrhea?
Traveler’s diarrhea is a digestive illness that can happen after visiting certain parts of the world. It causes frequent, loose stools and is usually linked to food or water that contains harmful germs.
This condition is most often caused by bacteria. You may be at higher risk if you eat food or drink water that hasn’t been safely prepared, especially in areas with limited sanitation. Street food, untreated water, and improperly handled meals are common sources.
Symptoms
Traveler’s diarrhea often begins suddenly during or shortly after a trip. Symptoms can range from mild to more uncomfortable.
Common symptoms include:
- Loose or watery stools
- Stomach cramps or pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Bloating
- Fever
- Urgent need to use the bathroom
- Feeling tired or weak
- Occasionally, blood in the stool
How is it diagnosed?
Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and recent travel. In most cases, this information is enough to make a diagnosis.
If symptoms are severe or last longer than expected, a stool sample may be tested to identify the cause. Additional testing may be needed if symptoms continue beyond a couple of weeks.
How is it treated?
Most cases improve on their own within a few days. The main focus of treatment is staying hydrated.
Common treatment options include:
- Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or oral rehydration solutions
- Using over-the-counter medications to reduce symptoms
- Taking prescribed antibiotics in more severe cases
With proper care, most people recover quickly. Rest and hydration play an important role in helping your body heal.
