What is Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is a condition where the tonsils become swollen and irritated, usually due to an infection. The tonsils sit at the back of your throat and help your body fight germs. When they become overwhelmed, they can become painful and inflamed.
Symptoms
Tonsillitis often begins with throat discomfort and can quickly make swallowing difficult. Symptoms can vary depending on the cause.
Common symptoms include:
- Sore throat
- Red or swollen tonsils, sometimes with patches
- Pain when swallowing
- Fever or chills
- Swollen glands in the neck
- Headache or fatigue
- Bad breath
- Decreased appetite
How is it diagnosed?
A healthcare provider will examine your throat and ask about your symptoms. In some cases, a quick throat swab is used to check for strep bacteria, which helps determine whether antibiotics are needed.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on the cause of the infection.
- Viral tonsillitis: Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relief are usually enough
- Bacterial tonsillitis: Antibiotics are prescribed to clear the infection
- Recurrent cases: Surgery to remove the tonsils may be recommended
Most people start to feel better within a few days. However, severe symptoms or difficulty breathing may require urgent care, especially if an abscess develops.
