What are shin splints?
Shin splints are a condition that causes pain along the front or inner part of the lower leg. It happens when the muscles and tissues around the shinbone become irritated from repeated stress.
Common causes:
- Repetitive activities like running or jumping
- Increasing workout intensity too quickly
- Exercising on hard or uneven surfaces
- Wearing unsupportive or worn-out shoes
- Foot structure differences, such as flat feet
Symptoms
Shin splints usually develop gradually and may worsen if left untreated.
Common symptoms include:
- Aching or sharp pain along the shinbone
- Tenderness when touching the lower leg
- Pain during or after exercise
- Discomfort that may become constant with continued activity
- Mild swelling in some cases
How is it diagnosed?
A healthcare provider will begin with a physical exam and a discussion about your activity level and symptoms. They will check for tenderness along the shin and evaluate how your leg responds to movement.
In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays or MRIs may be used to rule out more serious injuries, such as stress fractures.
Treatments often include:
- Resting from activities that cause pain
- Applying ice to reduce inflammation
- Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises
- Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications
- Wearing supportive shoes or using orthotics
As symptoms improve, activity can be slowly reintroduced. Most people recover within a few weeks when they follow a proper treatment plan.
