What is Neck Pain?
Neck pain is discomfort or stiffness in the area of the neck that supports your head. Because the neck moves frequently and supports daily activity, it can be easily strained or injured.
Possible causes include:
- Muscle strain from poor posture or overuse
- Injuries such as whiplash or falls
- Wear and tear of discs and joints with age
- Herniated discs pressing on nearby nerves
- Arthritis affecting the spine
- Less commonly, structural conditions or growths
Symptoms
Neck pain can feel different from person to person, depending on the cause.Common symptoms include:
- Aching or stiffness in the neck
- Sharp or burning pain
- Trouble turning your head
- Headaches
- Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms
- Pain that spreads to the shoulders or upper back
How is it diagnosed?
Your provider will begin with a physical exam and questions about your symptoms and daily activities. They may check your range of motion, strength, and reflexes.
If more detail is needed, imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be used. In some cases, nerve testing or blood work helps identify underlying conditions.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. Most people improve with conservative care, including:
- Rest and activity adjustments
- Anti-inflammatory or pain-relief medications
- Physical therapy
- Heat, ice, or massage
- Bracing
- Injections
- Surgery is performed when there is significant nerve compression or structural problems.
