What is menorrhagia?
Menorrhagia is a condition where menstrual periods are heavier or last longer than usual. This can make daily activities difficult and may lead to fatigue or low iron levels. While it can feel overwhelming, effective treatments are available to help manage symptoms.
Symptoms and Causes
Menorrhagia can show up in different ways, but it often involves noticeable changes in your menstrual flow.
Common symptoms include:
- Needing to change a pad or tampon every 1–2 hours
- Bleeding that lasts longer than a week
- Passing large blood clots
- Feeling tired or weak from blood loss
- Spotting or bleeding between periods
Several factors can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding. Hormone imbalances can affect how the uterine lining builds and sheds. Growths such as fibroids or polyps may also play a role. Other possible causes include pregnancy-related complications, certain medical conditions like thyroid disorders, or problems with blood clotting.
How is it diagnosed?
Your provider will begin by talking with you about your symptoms and menstrual cycle. A physical and pelvic exam helps identify possible causes.
Additional tests may include blood work to check for anemia or hormone levels, as well as imaging, such as an ultrasound, to evaluate the uterus. In some cases, a small sample of the uterine lining may be taken, or a thin camera may be used to look inside the uterus for a closer evaluation.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on the cause of the bleeding and your overall health. Many people find relief with simple, non-surgical options.
Medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce bleeding and cramping. Hormonal treatments, including birth control pills or progesterone, can help regulate the menstrual cycle.
If symptoms continue, procedures that target the uterine lining may be recommended. In more severe cases, surgery—such as removing the uterus—may be considered. If heavy bleeding has led to low iron levels, supplements can help restore your energy.
