What is knee pain?
Knee pain is a common condition that can develop when the joint is under repeated stress or when the kneecap doesn’t move smoothly. This can lead to irritation and discomfort during everyday activities.
Possible causes and risk factors include:
- Repetitive actions from sports or exercise
- Muscle weakness or imbalance around the hip and knee
- Tight muscles
- Previous injury or strain
- Higher body weight increases joint stress
Symptoms
Knee pain can feel different from person to person, but it often develops with activity or movement. Common symptoms include:
- Aching pain in the front of the knee
- Discomfort when running, squatting, or climbing stairs
- Pain after sitting for long periods
- A feeling that the knee may give out
How is it diagnosed?
Your provider will start by asking about your symptoms and daily activities. A physical exam helps evaluate how your knee moves, its strength, and areas of tenderness.
In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays or an MRI may be used to rule out other conditions.
How is it treated?
Treatment usually begins with simple, non-surgical options to reduce pain and improve movement.Common treatments include:
- RICE- rest, ice, compression, and elevation
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
- A brace or supportive taping
- Physical therapy
If symptoms continue after several months, your provider may discuss advanced treatments, including surgical options.
