What is essential tremor?
Essential tremor is a condition that causes parts of the body to shake without control. It most often affects the hands but can also involve the head, voice, or other areas. While it isn’t life-threatening, it can make everyday tasks more challenging.
This condition is common, especially as people get older, but it can begin at any age.
The exact cause isn’t fully understood. In many cases, it runs in families, meaning it can be passed from parent to child. Changes in how certain parts of the brain communicate—especially those that control movement—may play a role.
Symptoms
Essential tremor usually shows up as shaking during movement, not while resting. The symptoms can vary from mild to more noticeable over time.
Common symptoms include:
- Shaking hands, especially when writing or holding objects
- Trouble with fine motor tasks like using utensils or tools
- Head nodding or shaking
- A shaky or quivering voice
- Tremors that worsen with stress, fatigue, or caffeine
How is it diagnosed?
There isn’t a single test for essential tremor. Your healthcare provider will begin with a physical exam and ask about your symptoms and family history.
Because other conditions can cause shaking, your provider may order tests to rule out issues like thyroid problems or medication side effects. Careful evaluation is important to make sure the diagnosis is correct.
How is it treated?
Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and improving daily function. Many people start with simple approaches and only move to advanced treatments if needed.
Common treatment options include:
- Medications to help control shaking, such as beta-blockers or anti-seizure drugs
- Lifestyle changes, like limiting caffeine, managing stress, and avoiding triggers
- Botulinum toxin injections for specific tremors, such as in the hands or voice
For more severe cases:
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) uses a small device to regulate abnormal brain signals
- Focused ultrasound is a noninvasive option that targets the area of the brain causing tremors
Essential tremor is a long-term condition, but many people find relief with the right combination of treatments.
