What is an Ankle Dislocation?
An ankle dislocation is a serious injury in which the bones of the ankle joint are forced out of their normal position. This usually happens when strong ligaments that hold the joint together are stretched or torn. Many ankle dislocations also involve broken bones, making them complex injuries that need prompt care.
Symptoms
An ankle dislocation is usually caused by a sudden, high-impact injury. This can happen during sports, a fall, or a car accident.
Common symptoms include:
- Intense pain right after the injury
- Swelling and bruising around the ankle
- Difficulty or inability to stand or walk
- Limited movement of the joint
- A misshapen or out-of-place appearance
- In severe cases, bone may break through the skin
You may be more likely to experience this injury if you’ve had previous ankle problems, participate in high-impact activities, or have conditions that affect ligament strength.
How is it diagnosed?
A healthcare provider will begin with a physical exam to check your ankle’s alignment, swelling, and circulation. Imaging tests are essential to confirm the injury and look for fractures.
You may need:
- X-rays to assess bone position and breaks
- CT scans or MRI for a more detailed view of the joint and surrounding tissues
How is it treated?
Treatment focuses on restoring the joint’s position and promoting proper healing.
Initial care may include:
- Pain relief medication
- Gently moving the bones back into place (reduction)
- Rest, elevation, and cold therapy
- A splint, cast, or walking boot to stabilize the ankle
If the injury is more severe, surgery may be needed. This can involve placing hardware, such as plates or screws, to hold the bones in place and repairing damaged ligaments.
Recovery often includes:
- Limited weight-bearing for several weeks
- Use of crutches or other support devices
- Physical therapy to rebuild strength and flexibility
Healing can take a few months, depending on the severity of the injury. Following your care plan closely can help reduce the risk of long-term problems.
