Royce Brown jumped into the role of president of Kettering Health Miamisburg and Washington Township in August. Prior to arriving in Dayton, he served as president and CEO of AdventHealth Lake Wales, where he led efforts to strengthen hospital performance, expand access to care, improve quality outcomes and drive strategic growth. Royce brings a track record of advancing clinical excellence, patient safety and organizational performance.
1. The Kettering Health mission is to live God’s love by promoting and restoring health. How do you carry out that mission each day in your role as a campus president?
There are two words in our mission statement that really stand out as making us different in healthcare. Those words are “God’s love.” I deeply feel that my role as a campus president is to create and foster an environment where God’s love can thrive and be cherished in our work. I want our entire team to love what they do, so that God’s work can be enhanced through us.
2. Which of our values guide you most in your work as a president, and does your own faith or personal philosophy contribute to that?
Learning. I deeply feel that we can always learn and get better at what we do in life. I want the many people I am blessed to work with to become the very best versions of themselves. We cannot be our best if we are not curious about how to get better and open to the feedback that is needed to effectively grow.
3. You have significant experience in guiding operations in a healthcare setting, and previous to your new role with Kettering Health, you were president and CEO at AdventHealth Lake Wales in Florida. How does your previous experience set you up for success at Kettering Health?
My previous role, in Lake Wales, was turning around a hospital that was failing. The community had lost faith in the hospital, and the staff was in desperate need of a trusting environment. Over the five-plus years that I was blessed to lead there, we were able to turn that around. The way we were able to do that was by being one team, all moving in the same direction. We achieved that by building an amazing culture that would last long into the future. One thing that I am very proud of is that the community of Lake Wales believes in their hospital again. Here, there is already an incredible culture. One that has been built long before I got here. It is my job to enhance the mission work we do, through that culture and create a vision for us to work as one team to achieve our goals. The patient doesn’t see our various departments, they see Kettering on our badges. When we care for our patients and each other, we must be one unified team across our facilities.
4. Although you just started in August as the president of the Miamisburg and Washington Township locations, what early goals have you set for more success at both campuses?
I have two early goals, in my first 60-90 days, that I am already leaning into. One is to get to know our team. Being new is a privilege that you don’t get that often. I want to hear from our team and learn what is going well and what opportunities we have in front of us to get even better. The second goal I have is to clearly understand the work we are doing and then define who should be leading that work. There is so much work to get done in healthcare, but to be most effective in executing the work, we must all know our role for maximum efficiency.
5. When you’re not leading the way at Miamisburg or Washington Township, what do you do for fun?
My greatest accomplishment is marrying the love of my life, Sharon, and having two wonderful daughters. Most of my free time is spent with them exploring new things around the Dayton area and beyond. Outside of my family I enjoy playing golf, reading a great book, watching my favorite sports teams or spending time with friends. I also really enjoy writing.
