Crucial Catch’s mission is to fight cancer through early detection and risk reduction. Since 2009, Crucial Catch has raised more than $27 million and impacted more than one million people in communities that need it most.
In partnership with the Cincinnati Bengals, Kettering Health is committed to the mission of Crucial Catch and provides fans with the tools they need to catch cancer early and reduce their risk.
Cancer Screening & Prevention
Through cancer prevention resources, screenings, and services, we’re committed to helping you be your best.
A breast cancer diagnosis can change your life in an instant. In the U.S., approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lives. The sooner cancer treatment starts, the more effective it can be—and regular screenings are the best way to catch cancer as early as possible.
Screening Guidelines:
- Women 40 and older should have a mammogram every year.
- Women 55 and older should have a mammogram every two years.
- If you feel a lump or if you have a family history of breast cancer, you may need to begin mammograms earlier. Talk to your healthcare provider about your risk.
Cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers—when found early. Through routine screenings, we can identify atypical cells before they become cancer.
Screening Guidelines:
- Women ages 21-29 should have a Pap smear every three years.
- Women ages 30 to 69 should schedule an HPV and a Pap smear every five years or a Pap smear every three years.
- Women over 66 who receive a negative HPV test and Pap smear should talk with their healthcare provider about whether they should continue screenings.
Regular screenings help us to find colon cancer early. We can catch changes in a patient’s colon and rectum—such as benign growths or polyps–before they turn cancerous.
Screening Options:
Men and women 45 and older should schedule a yearly fecal immunochemical test or fecal occult blood test. Other options include
- Stool DNA test every three years.
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years.
- Colonoscopy every 10 years.
- CT colonography every five years.
Early detection can make all the difference. We offer non-invasive, low-dose lung CT screenings that are proven to detect 85% of early-stage lung cancers.
Screening Guidelines:
- Persons 50 to 80 years old and in good health who
- Currently smoke or have quit in the past 15 years, and
- Have at least a 20-pack-year smoking history.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men. But it’s highly treatable, making screenings incredibly important for helping us stay ahead of it.
Screening Guidelines:
The American Cancer Society recommends talking with your healthcare provider about getting screened at
- Age 50 for men who are at an average risk of prostate cancer.
- Age 45 for men at a high risk of developing prostate cancer.
- Age 40 for men at an even higher risk.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., with approximately one out of five Americans developing skin cancer sometime in their life. Prevention tips and regular screenings are important, especially as you get older.
Prevention Guidelines:
- Routine total body examination by your primary care provider or dermatologist.
- Report any unusual moles or changes in your skin to your provider and discuss if you are at increased risk for skin cancer.
- Use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure when possible to significantly reduce your risk.
The Crucial Catch Impact
We’re working year-round with the Cincinnati Bengals to promote screenings and catch cancer early through the mission of Crucial Catch. Through screenings, resources, and events, we’re caring for cancer patients, survivors, and their families.

After completing treatment or reaching a milestone in their recovery, it’s tradition for cancer patients and survivors to ring a bell. During halftime of the Bengals’ Crucial Catch game, several survivors ring a special bell to celebrate and honor those also fighting cancer.

Karen’s Story
Karen’s Story
A Crucial Catch message during a Cincinnati Bengals game reminded Karen Swartz to schedule her mammogram—and it’s a decision that changed her life. Imaging revealed that Karen had breast cancer. “I had no signs or symptoms. It was just a routine screening, and we found it.”
