Women across Ohio now have more insurance coverage for 3D mammography and additional imaging needed for those with dense breast tissue.

3D Mammography

For most health systems, 3D mammography (or tomosynthesis) has become the standard for mammography. However, in Ohio, insurance companies did not always cover 3D mammography. Ohio House Bill 371 expands the definition of mammography to include 3D and requires insurance companies to cover it as a preventative screening test. 

Imaging for Dense Breasts

The law also has a big impact on women with dense breast tissue. 

Dense breast tissue makes detecting breast cancer more difficult. Previously, women with dense breast tissue were not always eligible (according to their insurance) for additional tests they needed. The new law adds dense breast tissue as a factor to qualify for additional screenings.
