Southwest Ohio Urogynecology first in Dayton to offer innovative procedure
Dayton-area women suffering from a common yet debilitating vaginal health issue associated with menopause and treatment for breast and gynecologic cancers can get a quick and painless treatment with a new and innovative laser procedure.
According to a study in the Journal of Personalized Medicine, 50 percent of postmenopausal women and nearly 70 percent of premature menopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer survivors are affected by vaginal atrophy, a condition in which vaginal tissue becomes dry and tender due to a significant decrease in estrogen. This condition also causes pain during sexual intercourse and can result in urinary incontinence.
The MonaLisa Touch® laser treatment is a breakthrough technology designed to prevent and treat vaginal atrophy and its after-effects. Marc Ashby, MD and Janelle Evans, MD with Southwest Ohio Urogynecology in Centerville are the first physicians in the Dayton area to offer patients the MonaLisa Touch procedure.
Here’s how it works: Carbon dioxide laser energy is delivered to the vaginal wall through a special scanner, creating indistinguishable micro-lesions required for triggering production of new collagen, and reorganizing and re-equilibrating the vaginal mucus membrane. The in-office procedure requires no anesthesia. Patients undergo three treatments spaced six weeks apart. Each treatment time is less than five minutes.
