The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) has again awarded Kettering Medical Center Comprehensive Stroke Certification. HFAP designated Kettering Medical Center as the first HFAP Comprehensive Stroke Center in the United States in 2013.
A Comprehensive Stroke Center must meet very stringent requirements for advanced diagnostic, evaluative, interventional processes, as well as community education, pre-hospital provider qualifications and a network approach to stroke care. A Comprehensive Stroke Center provides complete care to patients experiencing the most complex strokes that require specialized testing and other interventions. The Center must have the infrastructure and personnel necessary to perform highly technical procedures and provide all needed levels of care.

“The Comprehensive Stroke Center is the hub in the ‘hub and spoke’ model of stroke care,” says Dr. Tim Schoonover, medical director of the stroke program at Kettering Medical Center. “As the hub, Kettering Medical Center can expertly care for patients suffering from all types of stroke. Acute stroke care is expertly provided in all of our emergency departments and Primary Stroke Center hospitals as well and if necessary patients are transferred to Kettering Medical Center for the highest level stroke care involving neurointervention. This model has proven to provide tremendous benefit to many people in our community.”
