Did you know that as an employee of a not-for-profit organization, you could be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program? PSLF is a federal program that allows those who work for a nonprofit to have their loans forgiven after 120 regular payments.
To qualify for PSLF, a person must
- Be employed by a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or not-for-profit organization;
- Work full-time for that agency or organization;
- Have Direct Loans (or consolidate other federal student loans into a Direct Loan);
- Repay your loans under an income-driven repayment plan; and
- Make 120 qualifying payments
Follow these initial steps if you are interested in determining your eligibility for the program:
- Fill out and submit the PSLF form annually. There are two ways to obtain the form:
- Utilize the PSLF Help Tool for guidance as you fill out the form
- Download the PSLF form and complete it on your own
For the Employer Certification section, submit a myHR case through the online portal and attach the form.
- Once the form is submitted, Federal Student Aid will analyze the information and let you know if you are making qualifying PSLF payments. This will help you determine if you’re on the right track as you progress toward loan forgiveness. If you have reached your 120 required monthly payments, you will be notified.
The next steps in the process will depend on whether your PSLF form is approved or denied. Employees who are interested in this option are encouraged to closely read the requirements for the program. Learn more here.
