One of Anthem’s new scorecard requirements set expectations for hospitals to adopt the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization. This requirement included developing a patient brochure and policies, editing Epic for care episode and tracking compliance, and completing 20 hours of nursing education and three hours of physician education with attestation of completion.
In addition to breastfeeding metrics, three maternity safety bundles were required based on the National Partnership for Maternity Safety. These bundles included obstetric hemorrhage with 13 elements to meet, maternal venous thromboembolism prevention with 14 elements, and hypertension with 12 elements and six sub-elements.
All maternity safety bundles include patient education pre-delivery, during the hospital stay, and post-delivery. These involved interaction and education for multiple departments including nursing, physicians, policy, Epic documentation, order sets, pharmacy, and for hypertension, our Emergency Department. In addition to bundles,
there are required simulations of events, required parameters for care delivery, and quality case review.
This was coordinated through out Network Perinatal Safety Council. Discussion points were brought to the network
service line for Women’s and Children’s Services with updates provided at campus OB-GYN department meetings,
Kettering Physician Network service line meetings, the Kettering Physician Network Women’s & Children’s Services
Advisory Council, and every office in the network received education in person!
We were blessed to have a high-performing and very engaged, dedicated team to complete this work on a network
level so that all campuses would receive Anthem points by December 31, 2018. We were fortunate so much prior
work was done in earlier years to our network policies, documentation, and service lines, which allowed us to
solidify these network practices.
